Dunedin school trustees resign en masse

The trustees of a Dunedin school have resigned en masse as it deals with an employment matter with the principal.

A limited statutory manager was appointed to Rotary Park School in Waverley in June after the Education Review Office found relationships between the board, teachers and principal had become dysfunctional.

Principal Carmel Casey was seconded to an advisory role at the Ministry of Education, but is due to return to the school next year.

Board chair Bruce James said the six trustees have all resigned since getting legal advice they had no power to resolve the employment matter.

Mr James said it's been a frustrating process and he fears for the future of the school.

But he said the Ministry of Education appears close to appointing a commissioner to take over from the board, and the staff and parents are sticking with the school for now.

Ms Casey could not be reached on Wednesday.
