Woman's mysterious death was homicide - coroner

A coroner has ruled the death of an Auckland woman whose body was dumped in a reserve six years ago, was a homicide.

The body of Katrina Jefferies, 22, was found semi-naked in Waikowhai reserve in the suburb of Hillsborough.

At an inquest in Auckland on Monday, the officer in charge of the homicide investigation Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said several people have confessed to Ms Jefferies murder, but have not been able to say how she was killed.

Mr Whitley said that despite interviewing 750 people, police have not been able to establish Ms Jefferies' whereabouts between the time she left her home and when she was found dead, two days later.

A $50,000 reward and immunity from prosecution was later offered in return for information about her death.

That yielded some important clues, but no arrests were made.

Coroner Gordon Matenga ruled her death was a homicide, but suppressed information about the exact cause.
