A 14-year-old girl Kaitaia girl is in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship hospital after being hit by a school bus.
An ambulance spokesperson says the girl has serious head injuries and spent some time in Kaitaia Hospital before being flown to Auckland Hospital.
Her next-of-kin have been with her.
Senior Sergeant Trevor Beatson says it appears the Kaitaia College student was crossing the road on the way to school on Monday morning when she was hit by the bus.
The police Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the driver has been interviewed, along with students who witnessed the incident.
The Ministry of Education says in a statement the bus had finished its school run and was not in service.
Kaitaia College has offered support to its students.
