The 48-year-old Hawke's Bay man who was shot by police in Otane on Thursday is in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.

The man had approached police officers, allegedly threatening to shoot them, and then telling them he was carrying a hand grenade.

He was later found to only be carrying a bottle and some hand tools.

Two investigations are under way into the shooting.

Police commissioner Peter Marshall says he has told the officers involved they have the full support of police.
