Forty-eight people have been hospitalised with measles during the current outbreak in Auckland.

Auckland and Waitemata District Health Boards say there have been 248 confirmed or probable cases of measles in the region since late May.

Primary care clinical director Stewart Jenkins says that is an increase of 20 in the past week, slightly down on the increase the previous week.

Last week, the boards said they were stepping up efforts to increase vaccination levels against measles.
