Health warning against eating contaminated seafood

The Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health is warning people not to collect seafood from water contaminated with oil from the Rena grounding.

The container ship has been aground on Astrolabe Reef since early on Wednesday morning.

Jim Miller says any seafood, both shellfish and fin fish, that has off or petrol like odours should be avoided.

He says in particular people should not collect shellfish from Motiti Island.

Collection and testing of shellfish is underway by Maritime New Zealand.
