Boost in number of people getting measles vaccine

Health authorities say people who need to be vaccinated against measles appear to be heeding the constant urging to do so.

The Auckland region has a measles outbreak, with cases continuing to rise.

People born before 1969 when a vaccine became available are expected to have had measles and be immune.

A medical officer of health, Richard Hoskins, says people born after 1969 who may not have had the vaccine are now getting it.

Dr Hoskins says Ministry of Health figures show 4000 measles vaccines were delivered to family doctors last year, but that has gone up to between 5000 and 7000 this year.

He says more children being immunised can't account for all of the increase.
