New Zealander to appeal against Ashika sentence

A New Zealander sentenced to five years' jail for his role in a ferry disaster in Tonga is appealing against his conviction and sentence in a Nuku'alofa court this week.

John Jonesse was one of five people convicted after the unseaworthy interisland ferry Princess Ashika sank in 2009 ago. Seventy-four people died.

Jonesse was convicted for manslaughter by negligence, sending an unseaworthy ship to sea, forgery and knowingly dealing with a forged document, Radio New Zealand International reports.

The Crown is also appealing against what it regards as the light sentences imposed on Ashika captain, Villiami Tuputupu, and first mate Semisi Pomale.

The Solicitor-General contends that the judge was wrong to give lengthy suspensions of their jail terms.
