A man was in a volatile and possibly paranoid state when he shot his flatmate with an air gun seven times, a court has been told.
Glen McDonald, 43, has pleaded not guilty to one charge of murdering Keith Kahi at their house in Botany Downs in July last year.
Crown prosecutor Nathan Speir told the Auckland High Court on Monday the pair had been living together since 2007 and were heavy users of the drug methamphetamine, also known as "P".
Mr Speir said the air gun Mr McDonald used to shoot Mr Kahi was the same model used by a friend of the accused who had faced trial over another death.
Other details regarding the case are suppressed.
Defence lawyer Mark Edger said his client lacked the intent to kill and the circumstances around why the air rifle was discharged are critical to the case.
