Police Minister Judith Collins has dismissed the Automobile Association's call for speed camera sites to be signposted.
The number of speed camera tickets being issued almost doubled last year compared to the year before.
In 2010, there were 627,000 infringements - almost double the previous year and more than 200,000 above the four-year average between 2006 and 2009.
Figures also show 200,000 tickets were issued by the country's 55 speed cameras in the first four months of this year.
The AA says signposted speed cameras would be a better deterrent and do more to improve road safety than hidden cameras.
But Ms Collins says when there are big warning signs, people just slow down for a while, then speed up again.
She says a speeding ticket is a pretty good warning.
Ms Collins says the police have advised her the jump in the number of tickets is due to the introduction of digital cameras, and lower speed tolerance levels during public holidays.
