Police are examining a house in the Wellington suburb of Strathmore where a woman was stabbed to death on Friday.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s, died at the Raukawa St house despite attempts by police and ambulance staff to revive her.
Detective Inspector Stephen Vaughan says a man was also injured during what he says was a family-violence-related incident.
The man was in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit on Friday night.
Police are speaking with witnesses and neighbours.
