Auckland Transport chairman Mark Ford will stay in the role for an extra year to ensure continuity through some major projects.
He was originally appointed for just the first 12 months of the agency's life, after overseeing the setting up of Auckland Council.
Mayor Len Brown says the extension to November next year is needed because of projects including electrification of the rail network and a proposed downtown rail tunnel.
Mr Ford is also the chief executive of Watercare. He receives no payment for the transport role.
