The Public Service Association does not believe state sector reforms are needed in New Zealand.
Six hundred public sector jobs have been cut so far this year, and nearly 2000 in the past two years.
The latest cuts follow a merger between the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry and the Ministry of Fisheries and the absorption of the Food Safety Authority.
The changes involve the elimination of 241 positions, 97 of which are currently vacant.
PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff says he believes the state sector is not unaffordable for a country of New Zealand's size.
Considering the demand for public services, he believes the sector should be enhanced.
