The road through the Manawatu Gorge east of Palmerston North has been closed by a very large slip.
Police say the slip came down about 9pm on Thursday, 2km from the Ashhurst end of the gorge on State Highway 3.
Both lanes of the road have been blocked but the train tracks on the other side of the gorge have not been affected.
Police say it could take days to clear.
