Shark attack victims remembered

7:27 pm on 12 August 2011

A Levin man attacked by a great white shark in Dunedin 40 years ago was near the same spot on Friday to unveil a plaque for those not so lucky.

Three people died and two were injured by sharks in the late 1960s and early 70s off the Dunedin and Aramoana coasts.

A plaque to remember those who died - including Les Jordan and Bill Black at St Kilda and Graham Hitt at Aramoana - was unveiled at the Esplanade at St Clair beach.

Survivor Barry Watkins said he can still remember and feel his attack while surfing in 1971 vividly and needed about 90 stitches in his upper leg.
