Police have arrested a man, thought to have had a firearm, who was the subject of a search near Pauatahanui, north of Wellington.
Officers had been called to the man's address about 5pm on Wednesday.
He was thought to be in possession of a firearm and there was serious concern for his well-being.
Police closed Paekakariki Hill Road on Wednesday as the search extended to surrounding bush area and farmland.
Cordons in the area have since been lifted.
The man was arrested early on Thursday and was due to appear in the Porirua District Court later in the day.
