The Prime Minister says he came across the scene of an altercation while out for a run on Tuesday.
John Key says he and the Diplomatic Protection Squad officers noticed a man on the ground on a central city street in Wellington about 6.30am.
He confirmed it was an incident involving a taxi driver and that there had been an altercation on Lambton Quay.
Mr Key and the DPS stayed until emergency services arrived.
A 63-year-old man was charged with assault after the incident in which police say the victim hit his head on the road and needed hospital treatment.
The accused will appear in Wellington District Court on Friday.
