Experts warn early childhood cuts might be needed

Renewed warnings have been made that the Government might need to cut early childhood subsidies to allow it to direct more funding to poor and at-risk families.

The warnings came when the authors of three separate reports on early childhood education met in Wellington for a seminar organised by the Children's Commissioner.

The reports were published earlier this year by the Government's chief science adviser, the Office of the Children's Commissioner, and the Ministry of Education.

They agree that high-quality early childhood education is important and that its biggest impact is on children from disadvantaged families.

Children's Commissioner Russell Wills says the Government might need to redirect funding to those most in need.

The Government is yet to declare any new policy, but submissions on another report - about funding for early childhood education - close next week.
