Security increased after theft from hospital

A theft of equipment intended for sick children has forced Starship Hospital in Auckland to increase security.

A laptop used to distract children undergoing treatment was taken from a renal ward two weeks ago while a patient was having dialysis.

Auckland District Health Board says DVD players, doctors' cellphones, wallets and even vehicles have also been taken in recent months.

It says security guards are now checking wards more often so that patients and visitors are aware of their presence.

The DHB says a patient's family has donated a replacement laptop.
