Auckland ratepayers will be paying more than $700,000 for a campervan park at Westhaven Marina, near the central city.
Besides the cost of the campervan park, Auckland Council will use part of its $100 million Rugby World Cup budget to provide dragon boat storage racks, glass art panels, a toilet and shower block and carpark resurfacing for the marina.
The Auckland Rugby World Cup Co-ordination Group says work on toilet blocks and road resurfacing was necessary and would have been done in the next few years anyway.
Chair Rachael Dacy says the event has brought forward the redevelopment, so the council can make a bit of money from the site during the event.
Ms Dacy says if the 1,000-park campervan site is fully occupied every night it could bring in $300,000, although she doesn't expect that level of occupancy to eventuate.
Mark Richards from Clarks Beach Holiday Park says Auckland Council is stealing business from its own ratepayers.
He says that most parks are not fully booked during the cup event, and could do with the extra business.
Auckland Councillor Cameron Brewer agrees, saying it is yet another unnecessary cup-related cost.
She says the actual operating cost of the Rugby World Cup campervan park to ratepayers is $30,000, which she says will easily be recouped.
