Veteran welcomes extra funding for trip costs

A war veteran who travelled to Crete for 70th anniversary commemorations in May is welcoming moves towards greater Government assistance for veterans who want to take part in such events.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says he will be recommending that veterans receive funding for airfares and accommodation for future 70th anniversary commemorations.

Major General Sandy Thomas went public with his complaints earlier this year after the Government declined to help fund his trip to Greece.

The 92-year-old ultimately received assistance and others who had already been granted one-off Veterans Affairs grants of $2000 were allowed to apply again.

Mr Thomas says it is appropriate that bigger grants should be provided for significant occasions.

RSA national president Don McIvor applauds the plan for greater financial assistance.

He says the four veterans who went to Crete in May, with assistance from the Government, did so in a private party and were well looked after, but the move towards increased funding will be good for everybody.
