Kawerau primary school mergers announced

7:49 am on 12 July 2011

The Bay of Plenty town of Kawerau is set to lose two of its four primary schools but will gain a Maori immersion school.

Education Minister Anne Tolley has announced that Kawerau North, Kawerau Central and Putauaki Primary schools will merge to form one school on the Putauaki site.

Kawerau South School will remain and a kura kaupapa Maori will be established on the vacated grounds of Kawerau North School.

Ms Tolley has also proposed merger of Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College, which would see a junior high school for years seven to ten, and a senior high school for years eleven to thirteen, as two separate campuses on the same site.

Details of a consultation process will be announced soon, with any changes taking effect in 2013.
