Final push for Rugby World Cup ticket sales

9:27 am on 4 July 2011

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully says ticket sales over the next two months are crucial to the tournament's success.

From Monday, people can buy tickets for rescheduled Christchurch games, and tickets for other matches are on sale outside the ballot or hospitality packages for the first time since March.

A nationwide tour is planned, aimed at drumming up support for the event.

Last week, sales were 25% less than the organisers' target of 1.35 million tickets for the 48 matches worth $285 million.

However organisers say they are in a better position than previous World Cups have been at the same stage.

Mr McCully says the next few weeks will really test how enthusiastic people are - and he is confident organisers will reach their revenue target.

"New Zealanders haven't felt the need to purchase some of the pool match tickets too early in the piece.

"They've been aware that tickets would be available until close to the matches, and I think this is the start of the business end of the programme now."

Mr McCully says only half those refunded money from quake-affected Christchurch games have chosen to buy tickets at the new venues, but he expects the tickets to sell well from Monday.

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio thinks the rescheduled game there will sell out.

Tickets for the semi-finals, both in Auckland, will also be available for general sale for the first time on Tuesday.

The tournament runs from 9 September to 23 October. The final will be played at Eden Park in Auckland.
