Auckland measles outbreak escalates

5:10 pm on 29 June 2011

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says the measles outbreak in the city has escalated, bringing the total number of confirmed cases this year to 39.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Richard Hoskins, says the new cases were detected in several early childhood centres and the health service is working to quarantine those felt to be susceptible.

It is believed passengers on a flight from Bangkok to Auckland may have been exposed to the measles virus.

The Thai Airways flight TG491 landed in Auckland on Sunday, 19 June and carried a passenger who was in the early stages of measles and was infectious.

Last week, the number of confirmed cases of the viral infection rose, most of them linked to Oratia Primary School, in West Auckland.

But Dr Hoskins says these new cases can't be linked to Oratia and he's urging parents to immunise their children.
