Lunar eclipse seen from New Zealand

Some New Zealanders have had a spectacular view of the longest lunar eclipse in 11 years.

Among the areas of the country where people saw the eclipse early on Thursday morning were Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington.

Christchurch resident Margaret Hatton, of Parklands, described the eclipse as beautiful.

At first the moon was an orange colour then, when the eclipse occurred, it went almost black, she said.

Vicki Irons, education officer at the Carter Observatory in Wellington, said people in the South Island would have had the best view.

From Wellington, she said, the shadow crossing the moon was seen through broken cloud, and after a time the moon "simply disappeared".
