Tuesday's headlines: Almost 5000 real estate agents left the industry in the past year; extent of the neglect and misery suffered by many children detailed by CYF; tributes paid to Shrek after his final muster.

The New Zealand Herald leads with news of a walk-out by real estate agents. Almost 5000 have deserted the industry in the past year during a bleak period of low sales.

Auckland's top restaurateur warns that service in city dining spots needs to shape up for the Rugby World Cup.

And the paper pays tribute to Shrek, the woolly mammoth of a sheep who died at his South Island home on Monday, aged 16.

he Dominion Post reports a swath of houses in Wellington face demolition ahead of a state highway project in the suburb of Hataitati.

Sixteen houses, a sports hall and a slice of the town belt would go under the plan by the Transport Agency.

An internal Child Youth & Family report has revealed the extent of the neglect and misery that many children suffer before they are taken into state care.

During one 12 month period, CYF received nearly 125,000 notifications of possible abuse.

Scientists in The Press describe Monday's earthquake, one of the biggest since September, as a classic aftershock and not ominous. The magnitude 5.5 quake was centered near Rolleston.

A grandmother was seriously injured in a freak accident in Rangiora as she tried to stop her seven-year-old grandson driving a car. The boy managed to drive the car about 30 - 40 metres, before the car hit a mailbox.
