Far North Mayor Wayne Brown is leading a bike ride on Sunday to celebrate the opening of the first stage of a Northland cycle trail.
Cyclists from all over the region, including two Members of Parliament, are biking from Okaihau to Kaikohe - a 13km stretch along a former rail corridor. Mr Brown went for a practice ride on Friday.
He believes the trail will generate a host of tourism developments and says it should do for the area what the Otago Central Rail Trail did for that area.
Mr Brown says people will be able to bike from the Hokianga harbour to Opua in the Bay of Islands when the Northland cycle trail is complete.
