Jetstar is to push ahead with a certification process for night flights into Queenstown despite Air New Zealand saying there are serious safety concerns.
New runway lights will go into operation next month, but Air New Zealand told business owners in Queenstown last week that it still has safety concerns and night flights are a long way off.
The airline is concerned about a lack of navigational aids and the lighting of obstacles within the mountainous terrain.
However, Jetstar says it could be possible for to begin night landings by next winter with new satellite-based technology that guides aircraft through the mountains.
