Police remain confident they will find the person who stabbed a Wellington man to death in February.

Matthew John Hall, 35, died at his home in Johnsonville on 15 February in what police called a ferocious and personal attack.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says two women told police that Timothy Parlane, who was later killed in a train accident, confessed to the killing.

However, Mr Thornton says evidence at the scene and contradictions between the women's statements make him doubt that confession.

He believes the key to unravelling the case may lie with Mr Hall's close friends. One mystery is the whereabouts of a large hunting knife from the victim's house.
