Auckland Mayor Len Brown wants to treble the city's budget to attract major events to boost its economy.
Councillors will be asked to approve an extra $14 million per year in an attempt to match rival cities such as Melbourne.
The aim is to more than quadruple the number of nights spent by visitors, in a decade from now, and boost the regional economy by $80 million per year.
Mr Brown is confident he can persuade councillors there's value in the investment.
He says international visitors spend an average of $350 per day in Auckland, and the country will benefit if their stays can be extended.
