The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne.
It says a slow-moving trough is expected to bring bursts of thunder and heavy rain to the North Island regions overnight on Wednesday and up to 80 millimetres is forecast.
In the South Island, heavy rain forecast for northwest Nelson and Westland is expected to tail off overnight.
