Air traffic control operations are being reviewed as a result of the Christchurch earthquakes.
Much of the work handled by the Airways Corporation, is centralised in Christchurch.
In addition to managing air traffic control towers and radar centres throughout the country, the centre there is the communication hub between the ground and aircraft.
It closed briefly after the two earthquakes, although Airways says no incidents occurred.
The agency is now working with GNS scientists to assess whether the main centre should stay centrally located in Christchurch.
Airways says that at this stage, there are no plans to move as all contingencies worked effectively during and after the earthquakes.
