The Government has had to delay the introduction of new import standards for cats and dogs because of a request from outside New Zealand for an independent review.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry plans to introduce a 10-day quarantine period at the New Zealand border for dogs and cats imported from all countries except Australia.
At present, animals coming from some countries need no period of quarantine at all.
The new standards were due to have to come into effect on 1 May.
However an independent review has been requested by someone outside New Zealand.
MAF spokesperson, Rachelle Linwood, believes the person who has asked for the review frequently travels in and out of New Zealand with his dogs and would like to continue doing so without a quarantine requirement.
