A magnitude 6.4 earthquake in the Kermedec Trench, more than 400km to the north-east of New Zealand, was felt along the eastern side of the North Island.
GNS Science says the quake, just after 1am on Tuesday, was at a depth of 33km.
No tsunami alert was issued.
