An increasing number of runners and mountain bikers in remote areas has prompted the Mountain Safety Council to remind people to use the Outdoor Safety Code.
A search and rescue team located a missing runner in the Lake Rotoiti area in the Nelson Lakes National Park on Friday.
With so many new pursuits and activities, the council says it is a timely reminder to follow the safety code.
With more people taking on the great outdoors, it says search teams are called out more often.
