Breast cancer patient register opens in capital

9:59 pm on 6 April 2011

New Zealand's fourth publicly-funded breast cancer register opened in Wellington on Wednesday.

The register will collective patient information from the greater Wellington region including Capital and Coast, Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa district health boards.

Data is already collected in Auckland Christchurch and Waikato.

The information is used by clinicians and researchers to more accurately treat patients.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has provided nearly $1.5 million worth of funding for the establishment of the registers over the past 10 years.

It says the information provides doctors with a better understanding of breast cancer and aims to increase the survival rate from the disease.

The foundation says the registers will improve the treatment given in the future.
