Sports park debate not over

8:59 am on 4 April 2011

There is renewed debate about a $57 million regional sports park in Hawke's Bay, following a failure by the park's trust to get national support for building a high performance indoor velodrome.

A bid for a $21 million national centre of cycling excellence, has failed to reach Sport & Recreation New Zealand's short list.

Trust deputy chair Rex Graham says that is hugely disappointing and the trust now has to re-consider its options.

But the Te Mata Croquet Club, which was against the park in 2008, has welcomed the decision, saying it is time the council honoured its commitment to provide sporting facilities for the elderly.
