An Australian woman has died while climbing a glacier in Fiordland National Park.

Te Anau police say an emergency locator beacon was used near the Korako glacier and when police arrived on Wednesday they found an injured man and a woman who had suffered fatal injuries.

Police say it appears the pair lost their footing and slid some distance over a broken ice field.

The woman's name will not be released until her family have been told.
