'Health passports' for the disabled being trialled

4:45 pm on 16 March 2011

The Health and Disability Commissioner is trialling a booklet for disabled people that tells health professionals about their particular needs and issues.

Hospitals in Wellington and the Hutt Valley are piloting the "health passports", which disabled or impaired consumers fill out.

The passports list the support they need for daily activities such as eating and sleeping and any factors that trigger safety problems or stress for them.

The deputy Health and Disability Commissioner, Tania Thomas, told Parliament's Health select committee the passports allow health professionals to find all the information they need about a patient in one place.

Ms Thomas says groups like Age Concern are also interested in the idea.
