Kapiti council considers residential water meters

9:47 am on 9 March 2011

The Kapiti Coast District Council is considering installing water meters on residential properties to reduce consumption.

The proposal will be included in its draft annual plan for 2011 and 2012 to be discussed on Thursday.

The council wants to install the meters from Paekakariki to Otaki.

It says some areas are using more than 700 litres of water per person each day and it wants to reduce that to 400 litres.

Mayor Jenny Rowan says the current annual fixed charge hides the water costs of each household, but installing meters would mean people pay for what they use.
