Council to meet again over patch ruling response

8:21 pm on 7 March 2011

Wanganui District Council is to meet again in a week to discuss whether to appeal against a High Court ruling overturning its bylaw banning gang patches in the city.

The council met on Monday to discuss the issue without reaching a decision on how to proceed in the wake of the court ruling.

The court upheld the argument by a Hells Angels' member that the council's bylaw, which forbids anyone showing symbols of membership or support for a gang in public, applied too widely.

The bylaw was introduced under the Prohibition of Gang Insignia Act.

Earlier, Mayor Annette Main said the council's options were to accept the decision and have no bylaw, to appeal against the ruling, or to draft another bylaw with more restricted boundaries.

Ms Main said she was not on the council when the ban was introduced and wanted to hear from other councillors before any decision.

However, she repeated that the bylaw had had widespread community support.
