Police in Wellington are widening the search for a knife used to kill a Johnsonville man.

The body of Matthew John Hall, 35, was found in his house in the northern suburb of Johnsonville by his flatmate on 15 February.

The officer in charge of the case, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, says police have extensively searched the Broderick Rd flat for the large, serrated knife they say Mr Hall was killed with.

Now they're extending that search into the surrounding area and will be looking through other properties and bush.

The search, which will involve members of a specialist search group, is expected to take several days.
