Injured man on firearms charges

9:40 pm on 28 February 2011

A 28-year-old man has been charged with using a firearm against a police officer in Otaki, north of Wellington.

The confrontation between police and the man happened when officers went to a home in Kirk St about 1am on Thursday, looking for a man they wanted to arrest for assault and disqualified driving.

Police say the incident resulted in the man being shot in the arm.

A special court sitting was held at Hutt Hospital on Saturday in which the man was remanded in custody to reappear in Levin District Court on Wednesday.

The man remains under police guard at the hospital.

Another man was arrested following the incident, accused of obstruction, and will appear in court on Thursday.

Central district field crime manager Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann says an internal investigation into the shooting is continuing alongside an investigation being conducted by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
