Flares to be fired over south Wellington

7:30 pm on 12 February 2011

About 100 marine distress flares will be fired into the sky off Wellington's south coast on Saturday evening as a training exercise.

The Wellington Coastguard will discharge them from the fishing boat Steve Mayree, which is anchored near Island Bay.

The Coastguard says the exercise is being held to show some boat and sailing enthusiasts how to use distress flares properly.

It warns people not to be alarmed by the red glow they'll see in the sky between 9pm and 10pm.
