People in Hokianga are marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi this weekend at the Mangungu Mission station, near Horeke.

Seventy Hokianga chiefs signed the Treaty on 14 February, 1840, and large crowds now attend the commemorations there.

A fleet of waka from around Te Tai Tokerau is attending the event, run by the Historic Places Trust and tangata whenua.

Highlights on Saturday include a re-enactment of the original signing, which was a huge and stormy affair.

Siome 3000 Maori attended and several of the 70 Hokianga rangatira who signed the Treaty quickly changed their minds and returned their gifts of tobacco and blankets.
