Veteran Waitangi festival organiser Pita Paraone expects this year's commemorations to be peaceful and entertaining.
Mr Paraone says the 171st anniversary of the signing of the Treaty will be marked by the return of the navy in numbers not seen in years and a Sunset ceremony that may include hundreds of waka paddlers.
Other entertainers will include Malvina Major, Ray Woolf and a team of budding opera singers.
Mr Paraone says there may be some protests, given the occupations in the north over the last year as well as continuing concern about the foreshore and seabed issue.
But he says he does not expect that will cause any problems for festival-goers.
