Police have named the man missing at the Talla Burn stream near Beaumont in Otago.
He is Paul William Wilson, 28, a civil engineer from Roxburgh.
A 20-strong search and rescue effort continues on Thursday.
Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw says the river was flooding when Mr Wilson went missing on Wednesday, but dropped considerably overnight and was returning to normal levels.
