Beach warning after sewer pipe break

7:59 pm on 3 February 2011

Christchurch City Council is warning people to stay away from several of the city's popular beaches because a broken sewer pipe has leaked raw sewage into the estuary.

The pipe near McCormack's Bay was exposed as a result of earthquake damage, and has broken after floating to the surface.

People are advised to avoid Sumner, Scarborough and South Brighton beaches until testing has been carried out.
