The mother accused of seriously abusing her nine-year-old daughter has been given more time to consider her plea.

The woman is facing 33 charges including assault, cruelty and neglect towards the girl and her seven-year-old son and appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Wednesday.

The woman has been accused of using a hammer to cause her daughter grievous bodily harm, tearing her toe nail off and pouring salt into the wound.

Her lawyer Lorraine Smith said she and her client needed more time to obtain documents from social agencies.

The judge granted a six-week extension for the accused to make her plea, saying it was important both parties had time to look over the papers in case there was a way to resolve the matter without going to trial.
