Coromandel commune wins reprieve over buildings

A Coromandel commune whose buildings were threatened with demolition has won a reprieve.

The Wilderland Trust was established in 1964 on 64 hectares of land on the Whitianga Estuary.

The commune was given a notice by the Thames Coromandel District Council to vacate and demolish 14 sub-standard buildings.

Under an interim agreement in November last year, residents agreed to move out of the buildings and the trust was given a month to produce a plan on dealing with them.

A council spokesperson says five buildings have been inspected and while they still do not comply, they are no longer dangerous or unsanitary.

The spokesperson says the hearing has been adjourned until 9 February, but the case could be called off before then if sufficient progress is made.
